"The playground was part of a broader debate about how to rebuild London, as well as to plan for the return of more than a million evacuated children" (Kozlovsky, p.15). "For Lord Lytton, chair of the State Children's Association, a system of 'reclamation through friendship' rather than resorting to the courts was the solution to the problems of youth" (Winder, p.23).
"The creation of playground spaces also reinforced racial, cultural and class segregation" (Winder, p.34).In August 1943, a construction playground was opened on Keldsøvej in Emdrup. The playground, which has also been called junk playground, was the first of its kind in Denmark. The idea for this came from landscape architect C.Th. Sorensen; the wish was to give the children a free space where they could be themselves. Here, houses and towers were built from recycled materials - without much thought for safety.
